D.B. Visits Claremore Veterans

Film, television actor D.B. Sweeney, visits Claremore veterans.

A little bit of Hollywood was in Rogers County Sunday, when film and television actor D.B. Sweeney made a stop in Claremore to spend time with the men and women at the Claremore Veteran’s Center.

On his way to Chicago, Sweeney decided to stop in Claremore with his friend Webster Whinnery, a stuntman/actor, and the brother of Dr. Michael Whinnery, physician at the veterans center, making possible an “under the radar” stop in Claremore.

“I’ve never put on a uniform myself, but I’m very grateful for the freedoms I enjoy, and proud of the people who made (those freedoms) possible — I just wanted to thank them,” Sweeney said. “We’re on our way to Chicago to start a job but we wanted to stop in (to the veterans center) to say hi, spend some time with the veterans here, and let them know they’re appreciated.

I have children of my own, and as a parent, I try to pass on to them my respect for the men and women who’ve served their country.

Although Sweeney’s schedule only allowed him a few hours at the veterans center, he made the most of his time, visiting with and listening to each of the veterans, expressing his gratitude to them, posing for photographs, and handing out free DVD copies of his recently-released movie “Two Tickets to Paradise,” in which he re-unites with Moira Kelly, his costar from 1992’s “The Cutting Edge.”

Sweeney said he does have a new movie, “Underdogs,” coming out in limited release in Ohio.

He preferred for the focus of his visit to be entirely on the veterans and their contributions and in many cases, sacrifice for their country.

“We really didn’t want to choreograph any kind of publicity for my visit (to the veterans center) — this isn’t about me at all, it’s about the men and women here, and what they’ve given in the service of their country,” he said. “We want them to know that there are people who appreciate them — this isn’t about me, this is about them.”
